Frédérique Constant Flyback Chronograph Manufacture

The Frédérique Constant Flyback Chronograph Manufacture has been developed from scratch in-house for a period of six years. The individual components are manufactured internally and assembled. For watchmakers, however, it would be more important for Frédérique Constant to offer this manufactory-flyback chronograph movement at the Flyback Chronograph Manufacture at a price of 3,695 euros and thus remain below the magical limit of 4,000 euros.

The flyback chronograph function

The caliber FC-760 is inspired by the Flyback chronographs of the 1930s and the desire to go beyond normal chronograph construction. The classic chronograph function serves as a stopwatch, with which a certain time interval can be measured. In the case of a flyback function, the user does not have to reset the chronograph to zero every time he wants to start a new measurement. Instead, the chronograph pointer can be stopped with a single actuation of a pusher, reset to zero, and restarted. This function is of central importance when measuring successive events, such as racing.

Patented star wheel instead of standard column wheel

An unmistakable feature of high-quality chronographs is the column wheel, which is rotatably mounted on bearings and is required for starting, stopping and zeroing the chronograph. In conventional chronograph mechanisms, this component has several columns. The FC-760 caliber does not have a standard column wheel but a star-shaped . Together with the shift lever, which is moved via the start / stop push button, this component is responsible for the exceptionally smooth functioning of the mechanism.

Clever development: The watchmaking team at Frédérique Constant has worked tirelessly to raise the watchmaker's striving for ever new innovations with the introduction of one of the most challenging watchmaking complications. The high difficulty level is due to the specific expertise required for the production and the need for qualified watchmakers for assembly. After a long process, which involved the preparation of sketches, the conception, the construction of prototypes and finally the finished timepiece, they overcame all the obstacles which the geometry, the acting forces and the necessary meticulous fine adjustments had made to them.

The result is the new manufactory caliber FC-760, which is characterized by great reliability .

With this new caliber, Frédérique Constant was chosen for a modular design. The powerful movement consists of 233 components (only 96 of which are part of the flyback module) and has a rotor with a double-sided rotor as well as a gear reserve of 38 hours. That Frédérique Constant has built the chronograph mechanism from only 96 parts may illustrate how well thought-out the design is.

Skeptics may now object that such a small number of components are certainly associated with quality degradation, but this is by no means the case. On the contrary, when the chronograph push button is pressed for the first time, it becomes clear how thoroughly the functional connections have been thought through. When the chronograph is started, a strong resistance can be felt which protects against unintentional operation. Nevertheless, the pusher is easy to operate. This of course also applies to the stop and the zeroing of the chronograph.

The most important part of all chronographs is the clutch. If necessary, it establishes the connection between the energy source, ie the clockwork, and the gear train or the cadrature. This is done in three different ways: through the classic horizontal wheel coupling, the traditional swinging drive and finally the modern vertical friction clutch. For the imagination of the designers of the FC-760 caliber symbolically symbolizes a novel rotatable component with two toothed drives. If the trigger is actuated, it establishes a connection between the two "floors". It takes up the rotation of the central second on the lower level, that is, the clockwork, and transmits it to the derailleur via the corresponding component on the upper level so as to set the chronograph hands in rotation. At the same time, the lower central second also drives the second hand at 9 o'clock, which turns continuously. The rotations of the chronograph pointer are "recorded" by the 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock.

Re-actuation of the start / stop pusher causes a slight pivoting movement of the clutch lever. The chronograph stops. A small locking lever also ensures that the two chronograph hands stop at the exact location where they were when the measurement was finished. This allows the measured time to be easily read. This stopping operation can be repeated as often as desired using the top pusher. The chronograph is only reset to zero when the trigger is operated at 4 o'clock.

The direct "linear" flyback function: If the trigger is pressed only once, the time measurement starts again from zero. In this case, the push button at 4 o'clock and the associated mechanism ensure that three different operations are started quickly one after the other: First, the clutch is disengaged; Secondly, the chronograph is reset to zero by means of the heart lever, whose inclined surfaces rotate the two zero-setting centers so that the pointers are aligned vertically again; And as a third, the clutch is engaged again as soon as the pusher is released. The highly complex movement sequence runs directly from the trigger to the clutch lever.

Finally, the carefully designed shape and the way of connecting the chronograph module to the base, which is not carried out in a non-positive manner, is no less remarkable. This ensures a reliable and, in addition, energy-saving connection between the two mechanisms produced in-house.

Characteristic Frédérique-Constant design in two model variants

The Frédérique Constant Flyback Chronograph Manufacture has the characteristic features that make a Frédérique Constant so unmistakable. The model appears in two main versions:

One is characterized by a casual appearance with a silver or dark gray simple dial.

The other version is more classical and features a silver dial with elegant "Clou-de-Paris" gold plating, black printed Roman numerals and Breguet hands.

Both versions are available in stainless steel or in rose gold-plated stainless steel. At 3, 6 and 9 o'clock, a 30 minute counter, a pointer date, and a small second are arranged. The new caliber FC-760 is embellished with perlations and Geneva stripes , which are visible through the transparent base of the case and are part of the already unmistakable characteristics of a manufactory.
